Tim Slais

Background

Tim grew up in Dimondale, Michigan, a rural suburb on the west side of Lansing. He graduated from Holt High School in 1988 and attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.  Tim earned a BA in Political Science from U of M in 1992.

Tim worked as a truck driver for H. Smith Farms, in Lambertville, MI for a short time before moving back to the Lansing area. Tim continued working in the warehouse and as a truck driver for Butler Paper, later acquired by Unisource Paper Company, where he delivered paper products to printers in the Lansing area until fall of 1995.

Tim was accepted into the Michigan State Police 113th Trooper Recruit School in September of 1995. Tim married his wife Tracy while attending recruit school and upon graduation, the couple moved to South Haven in February 1996. Tracy worked as a legal secretary in the Holland area, and Tim proudly served as a Trooper at the South Haven Post. Tim and Tracy built a home in Saugatuck Township in 1997, where they currently reside.

Tim worked as a road Trooper at the South Haven Post and Saugatuck Detachment, investigating criminal complaints and providing service to Van Buren and Allegan Counties.  While working as an acting Sargent, he was a supervisor at the post responsible for complaint review and scheduling.

In June of 2003, Tim volunteered to work as member of the squad of troopers from South Haven to patrol during the civil unrest in Benton Harbor, Michigan.  During that shift, Tim was shot in the line of duty while investigating a disturbance in the City of Benton Harbor.  Tim was awarded the Fifth District Trooper of the Year for his job performance in 2003.  In 2004, while on light duty, Tim returned to the MSP Training Academy as a temporary staff member and taught Legal Instruction during the 120th Trooper Recruit School.  As a result of nerve damage from the gunshot wound, in 2005, Tim received a disability retirement from MSP.

Tim attended Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Grand Rapids and graduated Magna Cum Laude in the top of his class in 2009.  After passing the bar, Tim was hired in 2010 as an Assistant Prosecutor in Berrien County where he worked until January of 2015.  Since 2015, Tim worked at Timothy A. Slais, Attorney at Law, PLLC, where he continues to serve the citizens of west Michigan on an individual basis.

Tim continues to maintain excellent relationships with law enforcement and is highly respected for his knowledge, expertise, and attention to detail as an attorney by judges, prosecutors, and fellow lawyers alike.

Service Oriented

Tim comes from a service-oriented family. His father retired from the Michigan State Police as a Detective Lieutenant. Tim's older brother enlisted in the US Navy right out of high school, thereafter earned a commission, and served over 30 years in the Navy and retired as a Captain. Tim proudly served in the Michigan State Police as a Trooper at the South Haven Post for almost 10 years before being shot in the line of duty and receiving a disability retirement from MSP.

After earning a law degree, Tim returned to serve Berrien County as an Assistant Prosecutor, where he stood for victim rights for over 4 years.

Since 2015, Tim opened his own practice and has successfully continued to help individuals navigate the legal system in the areas of criminal defense, estate planning and personal injury.
